On May 6, 2021, the European
Commission published an announcement stating that anti-dumping measures for
sodium gluconate produced in or imported from China will expire in January,
2022. On August 11, 2009, the European Commission announced in Brussels that
the European Union had initiated an anti-dumping investigation on sodium
gluconate imported from China. The European Commission stated in its official
bulletin that day that the purpose of the investigation was to determine
whether Chinese producers were flooding the European market and causing harm to
EU producers.
Chinese sodium gluconate initially restricted after flooding European
market
According to sources familiar with
the matter, the European Commission decided to initiate an anti-dumping investigation
against Chinese sodium gluconate after receiving a complaint from the European
Chemical Industry Council earlier in the year 2009. The European Chemical
Industry Council, which represents the interests of European producers, stated
that Chinese producers used their products to flood the European market at
prices below production costs, causing substantial damage to European
producers.
According to EU regulations, after
beginning an anti-dumping investigation, the European Commission must decide
within 9 months whether to impose a temporary anti-dumping duty on the imported
products under investigation, and then member nations of the European Union
must decide within 15 months whether to impose a long-term anti-dumping
restriction of five years on these imported products. However, in 2015, the
European Commission began an investigation into the possible lifting of
restrictions on Chinese sodium gluconate, and the restrictions will finally be
lifted next year.
Sodium gluconate widely used in construction, food, and medicine
Sodium gluconate is a deep-processed
product of glucose, and it is also a basic raw material for preparing
gluconolactone, and gluconate. It is widely used in the food industry as a
nutritional supplement, curing agent, and buffer solution. The product has good
thermal stability and no absorbant properties. Since sodium gluconate easily
bonds with metallic ions, it is widely used in water treatment, electroplating,
metal and non-metal surface cleaning and cement production, as well as other
industrial sectors.
In concrete engineering, sodium gluconate is used as a plasticizer and
cement retarder. Its plasticizing and retarding effects are very significant,
and it can greatly improve the workability of concrete. As a cement retarder,
it can extend the initial setting time of cement from a few hours to a few days
without compromising durability. When used in food, sodium gluconate can
effectively prevent low sodium syndrome.
Furthermore, it has an excellent taste threshold, with no bitterness or
astringency. Its salty taste is close to table salt, and its taste threshold is
much higher than other organic acid salts. In medicine, sodium gluconate can
help to adjust the pH balance in the human body to restore normal function to
the nervous system. In addition, sodium gluconate is also used for surface
decontamination of steel products, as a special cleaning agent for glass
bottles, as a corrosion inhibitor for circulating cooling water, and as a water
quality stabilizer.
